Million DJ March in DC
As a DJ myself I can see what this organizer Shaw is trying to do - DJ salaries are extremely unregulated, most times the money is made under the table and nobody is really all that clear about what is legal and what is not. From what I gleaned from the article though I think this should be less about DJ rights (from the excerpts it doesn’t sound like the pro DJs are all that concerned about their rights in the first place) and more about clarifying the opaque nature of music copyright and the role a DJ plays in the music copyright system. Many DJs that start a business don’t know anything about licenses or BMI or ASCAP or that they might even need to be involved with any of the above. Should be interesting to see how this ends up panning out….
