Great primer to online ad campaign creation for musicians -

Great article on how to gain traction in the online world as a musician. At the end of the day, music is a business - in the past, record labels handled all of these business aspects because they diversified their income streams and could keep a large staff of support people on board. As a DIY artist, the onus then falls on you to handle all aspects of your business, with the ultimate benefits being undivided revenue streams and pure artistic control. Unfortunately, many times nuanced components such as search-engine optimization, web analytics and hosting services are overlooked and can cripple a DIY artist without them even knowing. Just because you are great at music doesn’t mean you know HTML, PHP or how to track data movement surrounding your web presence. That’s not a knock, it’s just an important obstacle to identify and conquer.

RightsFlow links up with Rhapsody -

Interesting partnership here, but it definitely makes sense.

Sony ahead of the curve? -

Getting back into the blogging world after a long, long hiatus. While many things have changed since I’ve been away from the tumblr, it also appears as though many things remained the same. It’s good to see Sony pushing the envelope and apparently it is working out for them to some degree. Positive numbers are positive numbers, and compared to Warner’s reported losses, anything in the black would have been a victory. I’d be interested to see the take on UMusic and EMI though too - what ambitious plans are they undertaking and what revenue are they reporting? I’m sure it’s impossible to attribute revenue/income to a specific stream as an external source but it would be interesting to get a handle on/sense of it at aleast. Anyone have any insight on that?

Hey Obama: Reboot the music industry! -

While on the surface I would want to agree with Mr. Rosoff, I just can’t justify that sort of spending on the music industry. Yes, it would be great to have music education bolstered and stipends to help out musicians but it seems like such an egregious amount of spending at a time in which we are spending a ton of money anyway. Anyway, food for thought…
